16-Year Old Girls Can’t Sail, Either

Many 16-year old girls are excited to get their drivers licenses, so they can start terrorizing the roads while texting their friends (often whom are probably in the back seat).  But one 16-year old girl from Australia wasn’t satisfied with that–she decided to become a terror of the seas.

Attempting to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world, Jessica Watson got off to a bit of a rough start when her yacht hit a 63,000-ton cargo ship on a preliminary 10-day solo journey from her home port to Sydney, where the voyage around the globe was set to kick off.

No word on whether she was texting her friends at the time of the crash.

Amazingly, her parents and supporters plan to let the trip continue, once the boat is repaired.

It is notable that the Chinese-flagged cargo ship did not stop or otherwise respond to the incident (until Aussie authorities chased them down). Also, it apparently had no one on board who could speak English or Australian.

Nice. Doesn’t explain who’s fault it was, though–I’d still blame texting.
