Today, when we got the mail, we noticed that there was one of those big fashion type magazines at the back.  Assuming it was for the wife, we paid it no attention–until I caught a glimpse of my name on the label.  Finding that strange, I took a closer look, and realized it was a copy of Vegas.  Interestingly, I had picked up a copy of their April issue at the book store last week, just to compare it to the Las Vegas Living we’ve been getting since Christmas.

I haven’t had a chance to look it over in detail yet, but I can’t imagine any way in which I won’t enjoy it–even if it does appear to have lots of pictures of the celeb set that I find rather annoying in Vegas–I’ll read damn near anything about Sin City.

The three day “competitive beer pong extravaganza” wraps up tomorrow at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Vegas (been there 5 times in the last two years, and I have no idea where that is).  It’s the third year of the event, which started with a $10,000 prize in 2005.  Last year, fresh out of the University of Michigan, Jason Coben and Nick Velissaris beat out more than 160 other competitors to split the $10,000 prize.

But beer pong isn’t just about drinking, according to WSOBP co-founder Billy Gaines:

“What we’re trying to do with this event is diminish the potential negative aspects of beer pong so we can focus on the positive characteristics of the game: the competition, the socialization, and having a good time. Besides, the growing popularity of beer pong necessitated a national event, which, as fanatical beer pong players ourselves, we are happy to provide.”

There is an official World Series of Beer Pong Web site, too, with all kinds of equipment, clothing, and updates from the tournament.  And, for those of you too lazy to actually throw ping pong balls at beer cups, even better news–there’s Beer Pong for the Nintendo Wii as well!

The trip went well–won some money in the sports book, won even more at the tables, and didn’t get arrested.  Unfortunately, we missed the ‘Pole-a-Palooza’ at The Mirage on Tuesday night.  Next time, better planning.

Some quick reviews:

• Stayed at the Golden Nugget downtown.  It was nice.  Not great.  Not as good as last time, but nice enough.
• Favorite hotel & casino?  Still Wynn Las Vegas.  Sat at a blackjack table for 14 hours on Sunday.  Other than a couple of annoying coked out Paris Hilton wannabes right away in the morning, it was another wonderful experience–great players, great dealers, great floor people, great cocktail waitresses. 
• Binion’s Original Coffeehouse–it’s not the fanciest in Vegas, but after the flight, and after 14 hours of drinking whiskey while playing blackjack, it hit the spot.
• Hennessey’s Tavern downtown (same block as the neon mueseum)–dumb promotion with the World’s Largest Pint, but a good sandwich.
• Voodoo Lounge at the Rio–still the greatest view in Vegas, but the whole place has kind of turned to crap since they started targeting the same market as The Palms.  What used to be a nice lounge with a too loud bar now is all uncomfortable couches and $12 crappy drinks.

In recent years, the casino was known more for being one of the few options in the heart of the strip where $5 blackjack and craps tables could be found (we know, we played there last year a few times when we were out there and not on a lucky streak), as well as it’s bikini bull riding (a show I wish I had had a chance to review).  The hotel and casino closed for good in July. 

The space will be used for a resort planned by IDB Group and Elad Group, the owner of The Plaza hotel in New York. The developers have said they want to create a luxury hotel with about 3,500 rooms, private residences, retail space and a casino bearing The Plaza brand, all to reach for the highest end of the market.  Frankly, sounds like another overpriced option to eventually avoid to me.
