The Hangover DVD Review

Had the opportunity to check out the DVD of The Hangover (Unrated Two-Disc Special Edition) over the weekend, and have to admit, I’m impressed. The DVD includes both the theatrical release and an unrated version of the film, along with some standard DVD fare–commentary, gag reel, and some extra photos from the missing camera (if you’d like to try to win a free copy of The Hangover on Blu-Ray, check our previous post).

If you’re a fan of Ken Jeong’s performance, you’ll definitely get a kick out of the extra’s, as there are numerous improv outtakes from several of his scenes, and several other quasi-interviews with him that are out there.

The highlight of the DVD, of course, is the movie itself, which is the best comedy I’ve seen in 2009, and possibly the last few years. I think a lot went into making it that, from not over-hyping the movie coming out, leaving some of the best parts out of the trailer (while still making it funny), and using actors who aren’t quite yet household names (or weren’t). This, combined with some early positive reviews via social media, and Warner Brothers ended up with a hit on their hands, which actually exceeded my expectations, rather than failed to live up to them (like so many Will Ferrell movies of late).

Now let’s just hope they don’t take the typical Hollywood route, and decide they have to make a sequel…

Fringe Sport for 2012 Olympics?

While perusing the sports blogosphere they other day, we came across an article on Hugging Harold Reynolds about a Facebook Group that they were in support of. Being (sadly) a fairly regular Facebooker, I thought I’d check it out.

Turns out, some people in California want to petition the Olympics to add Pole Dancing as an Olympic Sport at the 2012 Games.

Can you imagine the judging controversies when the American Pairs Pole Dancing Team gives the German judge a happy ending? Or when the Japanese judge awards all non-Japanese contestants low scores for not having enough fetish elements?

Come to think of it, this could be a sport that might finally give NBC some decent ratings for the Olympics–assuming that by then that they aren’t able to ram the whole Michael Phelps bong story down our throats again. Or maybe that will make it as a sport too, and Phelps can go for 9 gold medals…

Missouri Town Considering Ban on Fun

The town of St. Charles, Missouri, is considering a bill that would ban table dancing, drinking contests, profane language, and even swearing in bars. Officials contend the bill is needed to keep rowdy crowds under control because the historic downtown area gets a little too lively on some nights. Not surprisingly, at least one bar owner worries that the bill is too vague, and may be a violation of people’s civil rights.

Husband Trades in Wife for $750,000

OK, not exactly–his wife actually left him for her boss, a wealthy realtor. But Mississippi plumber Johnny Valentine did something about it that didn’t involve driving over to his house with guns–he took the sonofabitch to court. And won.

Turns out Mississippi (along with about five other states) has a law that allows a cuckolded spouse to seek damages for “loss of society, companionship, love and affection,” as well as “the loss of sexual relations.” And with her admission of adultery in hand (not to mention the daughter that apparently was quite obviously not his), he was awarded $750,000.

Jerry Fitch, the new husband of Valentine’s ex, appealed the decision to the Mississippi Supreme Court, claiming the verdict was unconstitutional, “antiquated” and based on “medieval notions” about marriage and property. They refused to overturn the verdict, and the US Supreme Court declined to hear the case.

So, wife & kid, or $750 large–which would you take?
